Drilling for oil, from Johns Hopkins University, is an interactive JAVA simulation. The student has an area of land and builds oil drilling wells on it. For each well drilled, the deph of the oil beneath serface level is given and the student has to determine what the underlying topography is based on the deph data. The challenge is for the student to determine the topography at the lowest cost. There are two types of terrain: Flat and Mountainous. This resource attempts to teach an important skill in petroleum engineering in a simple and fun way. The user tries to guess the underlying topography and will hopefully gain an understanding of what clues to look for in order to make quick deductions from a small amount of data. The applet comes with a short instruction page which gives a brief introduction to the simulation and describes the task for the student....
